BIOGRAPHY


Praised for his “strong, true baritone” (Opera Today) and “genial baritonal warmth and charm” (Classical Source), British baritone James Geidt is fast gaining recognition as a rising talent across the operatic and concert platforms.

Recent and future highlights include his debut for Garsington Opera as Demetrius in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, his debut for Scottish Opera performing on their ‘Opera Highlights’ tour around Scotland, Pluton in Charpentier’s La descente d’Orphée aux enfers at the Buxton International Festival, the Hunter in Dvořák’s Rusalka at the Edinburgh International Festival, The Sorceress in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas for the Vache Baroque Festival and Schaunard in Puccini’s La Boheme for Devon Opera.

Further roles include Papageno in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Forester in Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Le Comte in Massenet’s Chérubin and L’horloge Comtoise/Le Chat in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges all for Royal Academy Opera.

James has worked as an Alvarez Emerging Artist at Garsington Opera across multiple seasons and was awarded the Simon Sandbach award for his achievements across the 2024 season.  In 2023, James stepped in to join the intimate Vokalensemble at the Staatsoper Hamburg for a revival of Sciarrino’s Venere e Adone, conducted by Kent Nagano.

In concert, James has appeared at the Birmingham Symphony Hall, Sinfonia Smith Square, Palau de la Música Catalana, Auditorio Nacional de Música, Cadogan Hall and at the Three Choir’s Festival with conductors including Lawrence Cummings, Edward Gardner, Edward Higginbottom and Adrian Partington. Recent performances include Handel’s Messiah at Smith Square Hall, Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music in the Barnes Music Festival, Bach’s B minor Mass for the North London Chorus and Handel’s Israel in Egypt at the Semana de Musica Religiosa in Cuenca.

James is a former Opera Prelude Young Artist. James trained at the Royal Academy of Music and was formerly a choral scholar in the choir of New College, Oxford.  Whilst at the Royal Academy of Music, James won the Joan Chissell Schumann competition and was a finalist in the Richard Lewis singing competition.  He began singing as a boy chorister in the choir of St John’s College, Cambridge.
